Underwater leak testing is a commonly applied method for detecting leaks in complicated products and assemblies. The air bubbles around the leak area help in identifying the location of the leak.
Usually, vacuum decay or differential pressure is applied to check whether a part has a leak. The underwater method is used to further identify the location of the leak. If the part has a leak, the simple decay of pressure won’t show the path of the leak. If the part does not pass muster in a quantifiable test, then the last resort is to detect the leak path using an underwater leakage tester.
All these instances make use of the technique of submerging a part in water. In some cases, leak testing may be carried out only using an underwater leak tester. For some complex package sealing applications and where you need to know the location of the leak, underwater leak testing is an ideal way to test for leakage.
When you submerge apart it calls for some force to push the part underwater against the buoyancy. To identify the force, begin by calculating the volume of the water that is displaced by the part. Then, multiply this number by 10N (1KgF) per litre! Next, subtract the part’s mass to arrive at a final figure which indicates the amount of force that is required to hold the product after submerging it underwater.
Usually, the operator will make a visual inspection to identify whether the product is in good condition. When a bubble forms and is released, it must be identified manually, which gives this technique lower credibility when it comes to detecting leaks effectively.
